How to Fix Double Glazing Windows Problems

Double glazed windows are an effective choice in keeping the temperature cozy. While managing to keep the noise down to a minimum, they also keep energy costs down! They’re perfect for any household, as they keep the heat out during the summer and the heat in during the winter. Double glazed windows are even safer as two sheets of glass are much harder to break than one. However, if you have double glazed windows installed in your home, you might have run into some problems. By the end of this article, you’ll be a pro in diagnosing and fixing these problems!

How to Fix Double Glazing Windows Problems

1.   Condensation

A common problem across all double-glazed window owners, this is usually caused when the window traps the moisture present. There are two types of condensation problems that people run into. Observe where the condensation is gathering. If it is on the inside pane, this usually means that the temperature of the glass is too low for the atmosphere and water vapor content inside. Ventilation is key in preventing this kind of condensation build up. You can provide natural ventilation, open a few windows, and draught proof internal doors. You may also consider custom-made doors and windows to ensure you have ventilation you need. You might even see some improvement if you increase the temperature in the house. If the condensation is inside the cavity of the window, you might have to check the seal. You should never see any kind of condensation in the window cavity, as this usually means that external air and moisture have leaked in. Call an expert to give your windows a check.

2.   White PVC-U Windows Are Discolored

You might start to notice small patches of discoloration after a while. This can occur when your windows are constantly exposed to pollution and sunlight. While this isn’t a problem with modern ones, it can still be seen on older PVC-U windows. To prevent this, you should always use a special cleaner. Not to worry though, this does not affect the performance of the window. However, consider replacing it.

3.   Mist on the Inside

Mist on the inside of the glass can mean that moisture has entered them. Normally, your windows are filled with gas to help with insulation. But if you see mist, this can mean that the gas has escaped. While this doesn’t pose a serious problem, it can mean that your windows aren’t working as they should. Luckily for you, these units are easy to replace. Call your window fitting company and they’ll have it fixed in no time!

4.   Draughts

You may have noticed a burst of cold air in your home, seemingly coming out of nowhere. This is also known as a draught and is usually caused by improper closing of windows. Over time, the elements may degrade hinges, and sealants, causing an incomplete seal. To fix this, identify where the draught is originating from. Once you’ve done that, check the side with the hinges. Make sure that the gap between the frame and the sash is as tight as possible. If you can slide a credit card between the gap with ease, make sure the lock is tight. If this still doesn’t solve the problem, consider tightening the joint between the sash and the hinge. Another likely cause for draughts is dropped sashes. This is an easy fix and normally involves adjusting the sash.

As you have seen, double glazed windows are a great option for your home needs and can provide insulation, safety, and a crystal-clear view. They do have their problems, but if you’ve followed along, we’re sure you will always be on top of any issues you might have!

  1. I didn’t know that windows could be double-glazed. That said, it’s good to know that any condensation in the window cavity of these windows is a sign something is wrong. It sounds important to find a window company that has experience with these types of windows or even that type of glass.
